New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (New Life) presented the third solo exhibition of clay art pieces created by Lo Yip-nang (Nang), an artist with autism, at Space330 on 16 to 19 December.

Diagnosed as an autistic patient in his childhood, Nang had the opportunity to learn about making art pieces with Polymer clay at New Life’s Sheltered Workshop 17 years ago. Since then, he has been deeply attracted by clay art and started to develop his creation in this regard. Nang has created over 5000 art pieces so far.

In his third solo exhibition, over a hundred pieces of new creations during the epidemic were showcased. Nang hopes the exhibition would help share his joy gained from the art creation to the audience and let more people know about clay art. The art creation is a self-nurturing activity for Nang, bringing him peace and joy. Arts can therefore be one of the ways for a 330 micro break to enhance our body, mind and spirit well-being.

Nang showed a fond interest in lines and geometric patterns when he was a kid. He was able to assemble the shapes he wanted with various pieces of blocks. During his vocational training at New Life’s Sheltered Workshop, Nang stepped up his proactiveness in clay art and discovered his gift in it. Nang has a unique sense of the patterns of colours and shapes, which his one-of-a-kind designs have reflected with original and remarkable craftsmanship.

The practice of clay art brings tremendous help to Nang’s temper control, and makes him a more calm and stable person. He was even willing to share and communicate with tutors at the workshop for art creation. Everyone around Nang is obliged to see Nang stepping out of his comfort zone.

Over A Hundred new pieces Displayed

Nang has not stopped his creation even during the epidemic. In the exhibition, the items included small utensils like cups and plates, as well as larger pieces such as bottles and photo frames. All pieces were for sale.

Apart from witnessing Nang’s creation, members of the public were eligible to register clay art workshops during the exhibition to have a first-hand experience of the joy and calmness brought by clay art creation, using arts for their 330 micro break for better holistic well-being.

"From ideation to execution, Nang took part in almost every stage of this exhibition. This was also his very first trial on utilising videography for the digital promotion of clay art. All of these mark a huge milestone in his personal development. I look forward to ongoing public support on his career as a clay artist.”
-——Mr. Thomas CHU Sai-ming, Chief Executive Officer of New Life

"We deeply appreciate New Life’s support in Nang’s development. Clay art has played an important role in Nang’s emotions and character, as he has become a peaceful and cheerful person. We are so grateful to witness his growth.”
—— Nang’s sister
