A Life Changing Moment to Chun Ying

Chun Ying Supposed to be striving for his career at the age of 32, Chun Ying lost his ambition and walked into Tuen Mun Long Stay Care Home (TMLSCH) with peace in mind. As he could imagine, the rest of his life would be spent in tranquility and silence at TMLSCH. However, destiny did not allow that to happen.

One day, a man who forges key with musical notes (a Music Therapist) arrived and unlocked Chun Ying’s heart with his special key. ‘When I am holding a guitar, it feels like my hands were out of my control. Following the notes, rhythm and melody in mind, they flow among six strings voluntarily.’ ‘I love music and I love guitar. I have a band with other dorm-mates, called Rock and Roll’, Aged 61, Chun Ying could never hide the confidence on his face when talking about music.

Affected by the pandemic, Chun Ying has to stay in TMLSCH all the time. Nevertheless, he is always positive and confident as long as a guitar is in hand. Music does not only enable him to connect with people around, but also light up his passion and let him shine on the stage.

Service Introduction

New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association operates two long stay care homes, namely Tuen Mun Long Stay Care Home and New Life Building Long Stay Care Home. Long Stay Care Homes (LSCHs) provide long-term residential care, active maintenance services and recovery-oriented services for people in recovery from chronic mental illness to develop their strengths and abilities that enable them to lead a more integrated living in the community.

The two LSCHs accommodate 210 and 200 people in recovery of mental illness respectively and are manned by a team of professional staff including social workers, nurses, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, health workers and wardens that provides round the clock residential care services.

Since our target service users are mainly people in recovery of chronic mental illness who have been hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals for some time before they enter our service, we strive to assist them in rebuilding their self care ability, work habit and skills, confidence and social skills. At the same time, we encourage them to develop their own interests and hobbies so as to make good use of their leisure time.
