Symposium: Pathways to Mental Health Recovery - Person-Centered Care and Beyond

To promote the recovery model for mental health services in Hong Kong, the Association will host the “Symposium: Pathways to Mental Health Recovery - Person-Centered Care and Beyond” between 26 and 28 May 2011 at Cheng Yu Tung Building, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Symposium will provide a platform for local and overseas practitioners to share their practical experience in mental health recovery. Veteran professionals and renowned scholars are invited to share with us their practice experiences, challenges and learning in applying the recovery model. The Symposium will be a valuable opportunity for local practitioners to gain a deeper understanding and inspiration for providing person-centered mental health care.

Opening of The Wellness Centre, the first Integrated Community Centre for Mental Illness in Hong Kong

The Wellness Centre, the first Integrated Community Centre for Mental Illness in Hong Kong, was officially opened on 14 May 2010 (Friday). Mr. Matthew Cheung, GBS, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony. Other guests included Mr. Tang Yun Chor, Vice Chairman, Yuen Long District Council, Ms. Chau Fuk Yin, Service User, representatives from New Life including Mr. Ho Sai Chu, President, Prof. Fanny Cheung, Chairperson and Ms. Sania Yau, Chief Executive Officer. Around 100 guests attended the joyful opening ceremony. A press conference on the “effectiveness of Wellness Centre’s services” was held by Ms. Sania Yau and Prof. Winnie Mak, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong after the ceremony, releasing the result of the service evaluation of the effectiveness of one-stop service, case management service and the promotion of holistic health since the Wellness Centre commenced service in March 2009 from the perspectives of stakeholders and service users.

Launch of the study report on “Mental Health of the Youth in Hong Kong” and resource kit cum Talk on Prevention of Mental Illness of the Youth

In order to understand the mental health condition of the youth in Hong Kong and enhance their mental health, the Association held a launch of the study report on “Mental Health of the Youth in Hong Kong” and resource kit cum a talk on Prevention of Mental Illness of the Youth at Esther Lee Building, Chung Chi College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 13 April 2010 (Tuesday). The study report on “Mental Health of the Youth in Hong Kong” conducted in partnership with Prof. Winnie Mak, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong covered the investigation results and relevant suggestions on different aspects such as the problems faced by the youth, their intention to seek help, the ways to seek help, their view on people with mental illness, etc. In addition, Ms. Sania Yau, Chief Executive Officer of the Association, introduced in the event the latest launch of the mental health education resource kit and website of the Seeing Heart 180 – Youth Mental Health Project, with the aim of providing more information about mental health for the teachers, youth, and the social workers for the youth.

Ms. Candy Ling, Clinical Psychologist of the Association, delivered a speech on “Early Detection and Intervention to Prevent Mental Illness of the Youth” after the launch. The teachers who provided counselling and support for secondary school students were also invited to the talk for case sharing so that other teachers and social workers for the youth could be better equipped with skills and knowledge of early detection and intervention of youth’s mental illness.

The mental health education resource kit is provided for the teachers and social workers for the youth. The kits are made up of 5 modules, namely “Holistic Health”, “Introduction to Mental Illness”, “Cure and Care”, “the Social Attitudes towards Mental Health” and “Mental Health and me”, in which interactive class activities, funny games and videos of short dramas and interview, as well as information for easy reference. The kits will be distributed to about 700 secondary schools and youth centres for their mental health education and activities.

The website http://www.seeingheart180.com is designed for the youth to obtain information about mental health. It conveys to the youth the messages of mental health and social inclusion with interesting and interactive tools that are popular among them. The website contains different parts offering information about mental health, online games, quizzes, mental health tips, stories of people with mental illness, a message board, etc.
